Playing Chess

This week I had an after school enrichment class and it was a chess class. I noticed my friend and classmate Brenden was taking the same class as me. I asked him if he wanted to come to my house and do a blog post about chess. He said, "yes." I was so happy!

When we got home we set up a chess mat and took some pictures and started playing.

Here are the pieces are moved around the mat.

Here, Brenden and I are playing.

Some black pieces got out!

Some white and black pieces got out!

This is a checkmate called the rook crusher. The black king can't move up because the rook is blocking him. He can't move down because the other rook is blocking him. He can't move sideways because the queen will get him. Checkmate!

Here is another way to do the rook crusher. The moves are the same but it is set up in a different position.

Sincerely,
Royce and Brenden

Do you know how to play chess?

What is you favorite piece in chess?

    Dear Royce,

What a terrific second post! I love how you invited your chess partner and fellow classmate, Brenden, to join in with the writing. Very nice!

You asked if I know how to play chess. I do know how to play the game, but haven't done so in many, many years!

My favorite piece is probably the queen because she is so versatile. Can't she move in all directions? I also liked that the knight moved in such a special way. I recall that it jumps in an L-shape?

How does your teacher advise you to start a game?

    Your proud teacher,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

    1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Fabulous comment! I love how you did the border. :-)

Brenden actually didn't know he was in chess class at first (he thought he was in the boys and girls club), but then we called the office and he ran up (chess class is in the library)!

The queen moves in all directions as many spaces as she wants, and the knight moves in an L-shape and can jump over other pieces.

Our teacher says to always start a game of chess by moving the pawn in front of the king. That prevents you from getting the 4-move checkmate.

      What does "versatile" mean?

  2. Dear Royce,
Chess is my favorite game to play. My dad taught me to play when I was your age. I was one of the only girls in my class that new how to play and when I was in high school I was part of a chess club. One time I even played against my history teacher and won. I think the game taught me many important life skills such as patience, strategy and being a gracious loser. I hope you continue to learn this game. I also think you gave me a very good idea. I will make it a point to teach Sarah to play and maybe you guys can play a game.

Thank you for sharing a great post.

    Victoria (Sarah's mom).

    1. Dear Victoria,

Wow- you sound like a pro at chess. Chess is a very complicated game. You are always learning new tips about chess.

I decided to start playing chess when my friend Nick and I were finding an after school class that we could both take. Nick suggested chess. At first I didn't want to take chess class, but then, after my first lesson, I did not want to leave the chess board. I love chess so much!

      Sincerely,

  3. Dear Royce,

I don't know how to play chess yet, but I love watching Wizard Chess on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! My favorite part is when Ron sacrafices himself on the knight. Chess sounds like a fun game. Maybe someday I will learn to play. Your blog is awesome!

    1. Dear Maya,

I have watched up to the third Harry Potter movie and read all the Harry Potter books. My favorite Harry Potter book (and favorite book of all time) is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. The book doesn't have parts. It is just one book. My favorite Harry Potter movie is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. My favorite part is when they are playing wizard chess too!

      Sincerely,

  4. Dear Royce,
I do know how to play chess and I won a tournament one time. My favorite piece is the rook because there are two of them and they are very powerful!

  5. Dear Royce,
I do know how to play chess. But not very well. My favorite piece would probably be the queen because it is very powerful and it is a girl! :)

  6. @ Abigail,

You and your brother are both really high quality commenters!

My favorite move is pawn per motion. That is when you get your pawn to the other side. You get to get back any of the pieces that you lost. I recommend the queen if you lost her.

    Sincerely,
    Royce
